Things to do in Geelong

This resource is brought to you by the leading tax return accountant in Geelong, PAL Accounting & Advisory.

Despite keeping its town-like qualities, Geelong is the second-largest city in Victoria, so there are plenty of things to do around. The city is full of life, and one week would not be enough to fully explore what it has to offer. If you are wondering what to do in Geelong, the following list will come in handy:

The Eastern Beach

One of the most popular places in town, the Eastern Beach is filled with history and charisma and designed in the 1930s Art Deco style. You can walk the promenade, have a picnic or BBQ, spend time with friends, or just relax in the sun by the water.

MoPa – Museum of Play and Art

This is one of the most popular children’s museums in all Australia, situated on McKillop Street, and is a wonderful place to visit for both adults and kids. The museum is full of interactive exhibits revolving around play-based learning, and the cafes around it make some of the best coffee in town.

The Geelong Library and Heritage Centre

If you are wandering around the city’s cultural district, you must pay a visit to the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre. The library has 5 levels available to the public and has a vast collection of multimedia, print, and heritage pieces.

The Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre

If you are looking for a cultural experience, Narana is the place to go. You can get the chance to learn about the oldest living culture in the world and it features heritage items, native gardens, and plenty of animals. The Narana Art Gallery also features art from internationally acclaimed Aboriginal artists, but emerging artists as well.

The National Wool Museum

Wool production has been an important part of Geelong’s history, and the National Wool Museum is a true cultural jewel. You can learn about the regions’ wool industry from the moment the first sheep fleet arrived in the town in 1788 and all the way to modern times.

Visit the Wineries and Breweries

Geelong is home to over 60 winery boutiques, and you must visit at least once. Some wineries are fully open to the public, so you can take a relaxing tour and see how the best wine in Victoria is made. The region is also known for its beer-crafting skills, and breweries, distilleries, and cider houses became very popular in Geelong. Make sure to not leave Geelong without drinking a Furphy, the city’s most popular local-made beer.

The Geelong Botanic Gardens

Very close to the Eastern Beach are the Botanic Gardens, which were built in 1851 and feature an immense variety of plants. Some of the oldest trees in the gardens are registered on the National Trust Significant Tree Register and protected, but you will be most impressed by the rose garden that is kept impeccably to this day.

Jirrahlinga Koala & Wildlife Sanctuary

Koalas, dingos, kangaroos, and all sorts of rescued wild animals found their home at the Jirrahlinga Koala & Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary depends entirely on the donations it receives, which is why it may not be the biggest sanctuary you will see in Australia, but it sure is one of the most important ones.
